Jason was a truly interesting man, but he lost me a couple of times. He seemed to really love what he does and I really hope he makes his goal so he can produce another documentary. I think what he does is interesting but I can not fully relate because that was long before my time on the computer began. :) but I really liked his advice to newcomers. Be honest. Be positive. Take the hates with the lovers. You wouldn't expect someone with his career to receive much hate. But people have developed blog about how much they dislike him. And for anyone with emotions, that could be hard to take. But I didn't really hear his answer to the question of how he targets his audience could anyone fill me in?
I guess one of the most important traits of people like Jason Scott and Jonathan Coulton is the ability to cope with criticism and malicious gossip, as caustic as it may be. Staying true to what they believe in and trust in their creativity seems seems to work for both of them...
ReplyDeletebeing honest and hardworking is the best advice that he had, imho. it was hard to follow his talk because he tended to go off on tangents (a lot!).. I enjoyed his talk quite a lot though. Quite a fun quy
ReplyDeleteI agree with what Julian said. I think it's important that Jason Scott is able to handle the criticism but yet stand firm on what he wants to do and who he is. He's making the projects that he wants and is doing them his way. And to Kimberley I found it kind of weird that he would have people lashing out at him in hatred because of what he does. But i guess with everything you do no matter what it is. You cant please everyone.
ReplyDeleteTo answer your question, Kim, he first said that he makes the movies mainly for him, i.e. his very first audience is himself. He described his other 3 audiences as:
ReplyDelete1. people who had the same experiences (BBSs, text adventure games, etc.) and who buy his DVDs for the nostalgia factor. I imagine a lot of the promotion for this is word-of-mouth.
2. younger people who might find out about his stuff through older relatives, or stumble on it online, and think "cool, I never knew this existed."
3. people who just like documentaries and will just watch anything that is a documentary. I don't think he said specifically how he reaches these people, but I assume if you are a hard core documentary fan, you are probably out there actively looking for new stuff.
