Is More Better?

Is too much choice overwhelming to consumers?
This is the question asked today in class. My personal opinion is there could never be to many options for consumers. The ability to have so many different options for products is the way to specifically choose exactly what you are looking for. When you go to the store now or shop online you can pinpoint search options to find what it is you're looking for and that exact product. I guess that I can assume and understand how some might get overwhelmed for instance in some cases. It would seem that those who probably get overwhelmed find more choices to be to complicated instead of having the easy choice of that one particular product you're used to. But I believe in the fact that more is better and to have more options is better than having not enough options. It gives you a type of freedom to have so many options for products. We don't have to only choose be 2-3 items for anything because there are hundreds and thousands of options for almost anything you can want. While this may or may not be the best thing for the market it does however open up the opportunity for more products to be made and somewhere all the different products are being purchased. I'm sure that we could apply the long tail when it comes to products and the amounts of different products that are available. You of course have the top most desired item but all the way toward the bottom of the tail those lesser known items are still used and desired by someone. Everybody doesn't have an iPhone. Some people prefer a more simple phone that is less complicated to them but at least we all have the option to choose and find what best fits our needs and that is the most important thing for me. Options to choose what fits me best.

  1. I tend to get overwhelmed by the abundance of choice sometimes. Don't get me wrong, I love to have so many options on products and services. However, sometimes I think "Did I get the BEST product?", or, "Did I get the best deal on service?". This might not be a problem for some people, but it sometimes makes me wonder if it's just all too much.

  2. You know. That's a good point. I guess in wondering if you got the BEST product. It seems as if with all the options there's always something new coming out. Especially with cell phones. So many options and every month that new phone you bought that WAS the best has now been overtaken by something new because of all the options. So you can be left wondering if you got the BEST product available.

  3. I think when it comes to buying something (especially if it's something expensive) we tend to second guess ourselves and wonder if we did enough homework before we purchased. That's just part of being a consumer. With electronics and such being changed very frequently, it's almost as if we're being shafted because we KNOW what we buy today will only be the "next biggest thing" until the next biggest thing comes out.
