I can not stop laughing at this picture of Sesame Street's Bert and Osama Bin Laden. I do not see why the picture is such a big deal. It's a joke party poopers. Entertainment makes this world and its new new media. If we don't have things to entertain us we will all be boring slobs.
I am a big media reader as far as celebrity gossip and catching up on the latest show I missed. (I love www.mediatakeout.com and www.bossip.com pure entertainment.) I would love to have money like some of the celebs I read up on. So sometimes I visit these sites to see what they have wasted there money on this time. Also celebrities sometimes have exciting news or experiences that I can learn from. Like the big sexting issues amongst our celebrities. Pictures are being leaked all the time and its funny to hear what will happen next. Compared to Convergence Culture these media sites don't let us in on what is actually happening behind the scenes is what I want to know. So I am looking forward to reading further in the Convergence Culture book!!!
On the one hand, you’re right, the picture with Osama bin Laden and Sesame Street's Bert is a little bit kind of funny. But on the other hand, it’s also partly shocking, how fast such a picture can spread in the internet and which consequences it has.
ReplyDeleteConcerning your aspect with the celebrities, in my opinion, it’s always the same stuff. Who has a new relationship with whom? Who has drunk too much on a party? Sometimes, it’s a kind of boring.
The picture of Osama and Bert was funny as far as the context that it was originally created for. Bert is evil. Well you get no more evil than people like Osama Bin Laden. But, the Sesame Street people got so mad because people started using this as an anti american and pro osama slogan, which is never good to have an American production aimed at young children to be associated with crazy massmurderers and masterminds as osama bin laden. But the true nature of the picture was truly meant to be a joke. And I think it kind of got the point across that Bert truly is Evil!! :)
ReplyDeleteYea at times it does get a lil boring and I log off but I consider it funny and quite amusing its just something to look at... @ Kim yes it do show the evil and evil on the same team. I somehow think it wasn't meant for kids to view it looks kind of like an inside joke that went public
ReplyDeleteAmong the fact that the weird picture showing Bert and Bin Laden side by side aroused some justified irritation on the side of the creators of Sesame Street, it can serve as a perfect example of how farreaching the consequences of our new global interconnectedness are. It seems as due to the internet, the political and private sphere are getting more and more intertwined, with a dwindling accountability for individual actions. With regard to celebrities, I think that also applies to the private sphere and the public sphere blending in. I guess everyone of those gets the media attention he or she deserves or wants...
ReplyDeleteI don't really visit those sites that often..but I am a twitter and facebook junkie :)..I thnk that humor is positive, but when it gets taken out of context and used in ways that completely repel from it's original intention, then you can reach dangerous territory.
