In chapter one, Jenkins concentrates on the show Survivor (which I personally have never watched). To me collective intelligence and the different knowledge cultures that are out in an effort to only spoil a show in a sense is intriguing to me as a fan. I acknowledge that the time and effort put into the research is amazing and I can't believe that people are out there going through all the trouble to know details about the show. As mentioned the people that are involved in these communities come from so many different backgrounds but yet they all connect for one common goal. These online communities that exist for the Survivor community have become extremely popular and are constantly growing. Audiences are becoming a part of shows in a new and overwhelming manner. Personally I like to watch tv and not know what is going to happen. That's how the suspense builds up and forces me to be more of a fan of certain show, because I don't know what is going to happen. I would hate it if information about a favorite show of mine was leaked out and it spoiled it for me. That's like hearing people talk about a new movie that's out and I haven't seen it yet. As Jenkins mentioned, I myself wonder what kind of influence fans like these could have if they centered their attention around other things in the world such as the government and other political events.

Touché... but remember how the death of Osama Bin Ladin was leaked? Keith Urbahn, a former chief of staff to Donald Rumsfeld tweeted about his death! Im not going to voice my opinion on where I stand with Obama but I did somewhat feel bad for him that, as the president of the United States, he couldn't even break the news to us.
ReplyDeleteI mean let the guy get some positive recognition for trying to run this war and country.... thats all I'm saying.
ReplyDeleteYes. I do remember that. The first I saw/heard of the news was on twitter myself. It wasn't until much later that day when I saw Obama on tv. It seems like in this social media driven society we are in the internet has become the primary source for releasing information and making it accessible to the world. Is that right that it's like that? I'm not sure. But it seems that's just how things are at the time. The internet is the #1 source.
