After reading the blog post from Kevin Kelly on artists only needing 1000 true fans to be successful, I have to agree with his logic. With all the crap that's being played on the radio nowadays, and how record labels are basically trying to tell people who to like and listen to, I think this theory is a breath of fresh air. And, in turn, it will allow fans to be closer to their favorite bands, groups, artists, etc. It could also allow the artists to truly get to know their fans on a personal level; more than just a face yelling in a crowd or someone going to their favorite painter's gallery showing.
The one quote from Kelly that made me support his theory was:
One thousand is a feasible number. You could count to 1,000. If you added one fan a day, it would take only three years. True Fanship is doable. Pleasing a True Fan is pleasurable, and invigorating. It rewards the artist to remain true, to focus on the unique aspects of their work, the qualities that True Fans appreciate.
I feel this is the reason why we support our favorite artists in the first place. By becoming a "true fan", we help artists stay true to themselves, we' re supporting their creativity, and we in turn get their best possible output.
